Danyl's wow factor struggle, his X Factor friendships, and a new album?

• posted on Tuesday, 8 December 2009 07:57

Danyl Johnson has told how he struggled to live up to expectations after Simon Cowell hailed his first audition as the best he had ever seen. (Story taken from The Press Association)

The 27-year-old drama teacher from Reading - who was voted off the show on Sunday - was tipped to win before it had even aired on ITV after the high praise and audience standing ovation he received for his rendition of The Beatles With A Little Help From My Friends in his audition, and compared the hype surrounding him to that of Britain's Got Talent superstar and current chart-topper Susan Boyle.

Danyl said: "It was only a disadvantage towards me - I had to beat that performance."

He went on: "It was a bit like when Susan (Boyle) - and I'm not comparing it in any way - but it's a bit like when Susan did her audition. The first time it's easier to wow.

"You're always going to be up against that performance, it's just so over-hyped."

Danyl admitted he was "really gutted" to have got as far as the semi-final and not win the show, but insisted he was looking on the positive side.

He said: "I'm obviously really gutted because we get this far in the competition and you're one space away from being in the final and then you've got to go home.

"But it's nothing to be ashamed of being fourth place and I've really had a really good time, I've had a bad time as well, but I've had more good times. And Diana Vickers came fourth last year and she's doing really good right now so you've got to be happy with that."

And speaking to the Daily Mail, Danyl said he would be voting for 'underdog' Olly Murs in this weekend's final. (Following story taken from http://www.dailymail.co.uk)

He added said that he was happy dating men or women and insisted that he did not have a relationship with a fellow contestant, despite internet rumours.

There was also speculation he and Stacey Solomon had a huge argument during their time in the X Factor contestants’ house in Barnet, North London, with Mr Johnson accused of bullying the single mother from Dagenham, Essex.

But, yesterday, Mr Johnson insisted: 'There might have been speculation about fights but it just wasn’t true. Stacey and I would laugh about it. It was funny.

'And if I had been a bully or anything like that I would have been kicked out by X Factor bosses because they certainly wouldn’t have stood for it.'

Rumour-mongers have speculated for weeks that some people in the X Factor house may have been involved in romances.

There were also allegations about pornography being viewed.

But Mr Johnson – a drama teacher from Arborfield, Berkshire -  said that was not the case and insisted there were not any intimate relations in the house.

He said: 'There were no romances in the house. Everyone just got on really well. We were all like brothers and sisters.'

'We got on, so, so well. Jamie Archer was one of my best friends and, obviously, I knew Olly from Boot Camp.'

'Lucie Evans just phoned me and said she was really upset that I’d been voted off. And everyone got on with Lloyd Daniels. He was a really nice guy.'

Mr Johnson, 27, controversially, faced jibes over his sexuality from judge Dannii Minogue early on in the series. And some TV observers felt his sexuality may have harmed his chances of winning the series.

But Mr Johnson said: 'I’m not ashamed about it [his bisexuality] at all. I don’t think anyone should be ashamed about their sexuality.'

Explaining his bisexuality, Mr Johnson insisted he does not have a particular preference for either gender, saying:  'You fall in love with the soul – and that’s it.'

He continued: 'I’m single at the moment. I’ve got no time for a relationship. At the moment, I’m just going to focus on my career. After all I’ve just been kicked out of a show.'

Mr Johnson was the early favourite for this year’s X Factor crown but, despite his disappointment, was still pleased to have come fourth.

He said: 'I’m lucky to have come fourth.  Each week’s someone’s got to go and unfortunately this week it was me.
'Of course, no one wants to go out in the semi-final but I’m really glad that Olly got the chance to go through to the final because he burst into tears and he really wanted to be there.

'So I’ll be voting Olly next weekend – and  I think he will win.
'He’s the underdog and while everyone’s giving the title to Joe at the moment I just think either Olly – or Stacey - could pip him to the post. That’s what’s so great about this year’s competition. It’s so open.'

Mr Johnson attracted extreme reactions when he was in the show. Many observers thought he had the best voice – but others felt he was too arrogant.

As a result, the public’s attitude to him switched one way and then the other. Yesterday, he admitted he was like Marmite which, as the slogan explains, people either love or hate.

He said: 'I had a really good press at the beginning of the series and then a lot of bad press so I’m kind of one of those characters you either love or you hate. I am quite like Marmite like that.'

I know myself and I’m confident. I’m a teacher so I have to appear confident when I go into a classroom.

'But I’m in no way arrogant – you can like me or hate me. And that’s how the public saw me.'

Now Mr Johnson is preparing for the X Factor tour in the New Year and, he hopes, a record deal in the future - although he has to wait for up to three months before he finds out from X Factor Svengali Simon Cowell.

He said: 'I just want to go out there and sing. I’d make a record if I get the chance – but I don’t have a deal lined up at the moment. And nobody should have a deal before the winner.

'But, for now, I’m just looking forward to getting out on the tour because we’ve sold 54 dates.'

He also gave his verdict on why the show has been such a success this year, with audience figures topping 16 million viewers on occasion during the series.

He believes, the huge ratings are the result of  X Factor Svengali Simon Cowell’s decision to replace the ‘closed’ early audition with live-audience first rounds.

According to Mr Johnson, this  resulted in more fans building up an early loyalty to contestants – because they had seen them live.

He said: 'I had loads of people from the beginning saying they saw my first audition live – and had been backing me since. And I wasn’t the only contestant. It really built up loyalty towards us.

'So I think it’s down to Simon’s idea to introduce the open audition. As a result, thousands of people bought into us from the beginning because it was the public choosing as well as the judges.

Finally, in another story taken from The Sun (http://www.thesun.co.uk), we now hear that Simon Cowell is eager to sign him up for a record deal.

And other labels are also taking a keen interest in the drama teacher - comparing him to Jamiroquai.

Show judge and Syco music label guru Simon admitted: "Singers like him do not disappear. I would just say, 'Watch this space'."

Danyl, 27 - who is also set to cash in to the tune of £150,000 with personal appearances and the X Factor tour - hopes to have an album out next year.

He said: "I want to have a record out there - that's my dream. I just want to go into the recording studio and work with some great producers, make a good album.

"Because I think that's what we need out there - a really, really, really good album."

Danyl sings 'Relight my Fire' and 'My Song' to a rapturous reply

• posted on Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:45

Danyl Johnson received another standing ovation from Simon Cowell on last nights X Factor after his performance of Elton John's "My Song", and completely won the judges around with both his songs.

The dance teacher wowed judges Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole – who previously were two of his biggest  - with his rendition of Take That's 'Relight My Fire', and Simon again stood up to applaud Dany's efforts after his second song of the night.

The judges comments were as follows:

Louis: What I like about you is that you always bounce back. You picked Elton’s most iconic song, you made it your own. I loved everything about it, except the choir. You don’t need the choir – with your looks and your voice, you’ve got it all.

Dannii: A really great version of a great song. Much, much better than your first song.

Cheryl: I think that we’re finally seeing the Danyl that we first saw at the start of the audition process. You look more comfortable, you look more confident.

Simon: It wasn’t good, it was sensational. Louis, don’t be rude about kids on the stage, you’re like a dark cloud that blots out sunshine…

When asked by Dermot who the judges thought gave the best performances of the night, Simon answered "Danyl & Olly", again backing his singers to the hilt, whilst the other judges followed suit with their own acts (apart from Louis of course)

On tonights show, the voting will be down to the viewers only, so Danyl will need all your votes. If you thought he was previously safe, then we've only go to look at last weeks vote when Olly was in the bottom two, so make sure you pick up your phone and vote for Danyl. Let's do our best to push him through to the final 4! The number to ring to cast your vote for Danyl is 0901 6161101.

Let's see Danyl again next week! Post your comments below...

Danyl to put on his Dancing Shoes Tonight!

• posted on Saturday, 28 November 2009 13:04

Danyl Johnson will finally be putting on his dancing shoes for The X Factor this weekend, according to Brian Friedman, and hinted at by Simon Cowell on last weeks Xtra Factor show.

The American creative director said the final five finalists would be performing two songs each, including one upbeat number. Speaking to the X-Factor, Brian said "Danyl can't mask behind a ballad anymore, it's finally time for him to do an up-tempo and maybe dance - that's my hope," Brian said.

He went on: "We'll get in the studio tomorrow and see what we can come up with.

"He dances around in some of the group numbers, but in group numbers you can't really show up the other people so everything has to stay pretty much in unison. But for this we can pull out his best things so we can show the world."

Since Danyl's first audition, Simon Cowell has admitted to purposely giving him more ballads, and deciding its in his best interests to cast off any of the exciting frills which Danyl treated us all to back on the opening show of this years X Factor.

Now, Simon thinks it is time for Danyl to bring back more of his true self, so expect a different and more lively Danyl on tonights show, where the contestants are battling to go through to the penultimate show before the final.

Also, in this weeks news, it has been reported that Danyl has led a sort of X Factor revolt, as the workload became heavier than normal this week.

Complaints over the contestants having to do too much work this week were directed towards Simon Cowell, and it was decided that Danyl should attempt to get the message across. The contestants were feeling the strain this week as they now have to perform two songs on the night, as well as the normal group routine for Sundays show.

Simon was too busy to see the stars but spoke to them on the phone. An insider added: “It didn’t do much good. They’re still doing two songs. He wasn’t that impressed to be honest. He thinks they should be grateful for the opportunity.”

Apparently, Simon ordered the contestants to do a dance routine in the wake of lively duo Jedward’s departure because he feels the show will now lack spice and could lose viewers.

The stars will each be performing an Elton John and Take That song tonight – including one with an uptempo beat.

Danyl has always said his aim was to be in the final five but now he has got there he is putting in his all to do his best, and it's expected that he will be singing Relight My Fire as his chosen Take That song.

Danyl sings "Careless Whisper" to an amazing reception

• posted on Monday, 23 November 2009 07:48

On the 7th live X Factor show, Danyl Johnson triumphantly delivered one of his best performances yet with a stunning performance of the George Michael classic, "Careless Whisper".

Tipped by some bookies to be at risk of being in the bottom two, Danyl completely blew away the audience and received another standing ovation from Simon Cowell. Talking on Sunday nights Xtra Factor, Simon said that Danyl's performance was the joint best on the night along with Joseph McElderry.

In the voting, Danyl safely breezed through to the final five, but the shock of the night was seeing X Factor favourite Olly Murs having to sing again for survival - though he had no problems in winning the votes of the judges against John and Edward, who had defied expectations to get this far.

See Danyl's brilliant performance for yourself again above.

And all you Danyl fans out there are in for a treat next week, as Simon Cowell promised everyone on live TV that his next performance will be back to how we saw him originally - thats right, we'll be seeing some dancing for once!

Danyl Johnson threatens to quit X Factor over song choice!

• posted on Thursday, 19 November 2009 13:32
Danyl stormed out of X Factor rehearsals on Wednesday after a furious outburst during a coaching session with singing expert Yvie Burnett. (Story from Telegraph.co.uk)

The school teacher decided he hated his song, Praying for Time by George Michael, and does not want to peform it on Saturday night's show.

Now Danyl, from Kent, is threatening to leave the show altogether unless Cowell agrees to change the song.

An insider told The Mirror: "He literally burst out the door and ran off down Battersea High Street."

"A few production staff chased after him to try to calm him down and make him come back but he was having none of it."

"They even sent a car to follow him and try to make him see sense and return but he refused.
He seems very angry and upset and is demanding a different song. It’ll be interesting to see if Simon backs down or makes him stick with it."

Danyl Johnson, 27, has struggled to win over X Factor fans because he comes across as smug and arrogant. Show insiders have also grown increasingly exasperated by his petulant behaviour.

One said: "He’s not doing himself any favours with stunts like this which just make him look like a spoilt brat. Even if the song choice is wrong there’s no need to storm out, he should talk about it first."

After disappearing for nearly five hours Danyl was thought to be at the Sony BMG offices in London, where Cowell works, for crisis talks.

It is thought Cowell may agree to change the song but Danyl will have to make a grovelling apology to the production crew he has upset with his rants.

A show source said: "Simon will never tolerate rudeness."

Exciting stuff in the X Factor world! How will it affect Danyl's performance on Saturday? Let us know by adding your comments below.

Danyl sings Queens 'We are the Champions' and gets a standing ovation from Simon Cowell

• posted on Sunday, 15 November 2009 13:18

On the sixth live show, Danyl Johnson shrugged off any signs of a confidence problem to give a storming rendition of Queens "We are the Champions". Finishing to another standing ovation from Simon Cowell, all four judges gave Danyl great comments, and the Reading born schoolteacher come X-Factor finalist seemed very happy with himself. Good to have you back Danyl!

Watch Danyl's performance again above, and judge for yourself the complete turnaround in fortunes.

Elsewhere in the competition, Olly Murs failed to impress the judges, and criticsms were made at his voice not being suited to his chosen Queen song. Probably for the first time in the competition, Olly failed to receive top marks, and the current favourite may have to work hard to claim back his top spot, though he should be free from the dreaded bottom two.

Someone else who may be at risk tonight is Jamie Archer, who's lacklustre performance last night could see him being cut adrift at the bottom, perhaps along with Lloyd. Many feel that Jamie's supposed "rocker" tag is not being lived up to, and we feel that his appearance last night made him look more like a clown, with his make-up standing out in particular, as well as his new curled hair replacing his before outlandish afro.

In the current X Factor betting odds, Stacey Soloman has now moved into second favourite behind Olly Murs, with Joe McElderry in 3rd place. Though Danyl is currently in 4th positions, his odds have shortened in the last couple of weeks, and after tonights vote-out, we expect to see Danyl move even higher.

10 Questions with Danyl Johnson, X Factor 2009

• posted on Monday, 9 November 2009 09:08

To be under the sort of pressure that Danyl Johnson is under right must be very, very tough. From giving a first performance so good that Simon Cowell described it as "The best first audition I have ever seen", to being instantly installed as favourite to win the 2009 X Factor competition, Danyl has been right at the top.

But more recently, he has faced a barrage of criticsm in the press, with stories of bullying, accusations of arrogance and cockiness, diva tantrums, and an unlikeability factor only matched by Rhydian in recent years.

However, the reading born schoolteacher seems born again.

Last week he openly admitted to a terrible performance, half born from mic related problems, but probably not helped by negative media publicity. In spite of this, he topped the voting, and his emotional outburst showed the public a side of his they had not seen before.

Last night, Danyl gave a sterling rendition of Prince's "Purple Rain", and brought the house down with the crowd chanting "DANYL DANYL DANYL" afterwards, perhaps only bettered by the reception which Olly Murs received.

Chery Cole, one of Danyl's most outspoken haters, praised him afterwards, and admitted she loved his performance, whilst Simon gave him another of his standing ovations.
So, it seems Danyl Johnson is back in vogue, and coupled with a new closely cropped haircut, he is ready for a second push to win the show.

We got in touch with Danyl, and he showed how much he values his fans by agreeing to answer a few of our questions.

For this Danyl we are very thankful, and no doubt our readers will be as well.

Danyl sings again, and this week its the Movie theme!

• posted on Saturday, 7 November 2009 19:50
After topping the voting last week despite his worst performance so far, the reading schoolteacher come superstar Danyl Johnson is vowing to bounce back with a storming performance on the sixth live show, and the current fourth favourite to win X Factor, has been training hard all week amidst rumours of throat and flu problems.

Danyl, one of Simon Cowells maximum three contestants in the competition has recently faced a barrage of negative media press, but the general concensus is that the tide has changed, and the public perception seems to have turned full circle.

Eager to impress tonight, Danyl Johnson is ready to do Reading proud and show his true colours after an emotional yet below-par performance on rock night last week. What song will he sing, and from which film? There's a rumour going round that the twins may be singing "Ghostbusters" - how funny will that be?

Who will be in the bottom two this weekend? Is Lloyd's time up? Will there be a new face battling in the sing-off? We're confident that it won't be Danyl this time. Not long now till all will be revealed in the Saturday show. Stay tuned for a fantastic night of entertainment.

And finally, we can reveal that Danyl Johnson has kindly taken the time to answer a few questions for us here at Danylajohnson.com. We'll be putting together the full interview soon for everybody to read. A massive thanks to Danyl for showing that he cares about his fans. Good luck for tonight!

Danyl survives tonights X Factor vote - but Rachel finally leaves

• posted on Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:01
After a relatively poor performance on last nights X Factor live show, Danyl Johnson defied the public backlash yet again and survived to fight another day.

Talking to the Xtra Factor earlier on tonight, Danyl said that he expected to be in the bottom two, and actually practiced his song choice in preparation. Stating that his dodgy vocals yesterday were down to him struggling to hear the backing track, his delight at being voted through was obvious to see as he whooped with delight and got down on his knees after hearing his name called out.

The unfortunate loser this time was Rachel, who lost out on a deadlock vote to Lloyd Daniels, who was suffering from a sore throat.

Simon Cowells continued belief that Danyl is the best singer in the competition should be taken as a massive positive, and the emotion he displayed tonight couploed with the cracks in his supposed arrogant confidence are only sure to endear him to the public more now, so we feel confident that this is just the start of the Danyl Johnson comeback.

There can surely be no more bad stories to come out about Danyl, and if his confidence and obvious singing ability come back, then the UK audiences should have plenty more to come from the Reading school teacher.

Next week on the fifth live show its Movie time, so we can expect some classic movie power ballads. Surely a great chance for Danyl to shine and show us all what he is truly made of? Lets hear what you've got to say...

A less than polished performance from Danyl Johnson?

• posted on Saturday, 31 October 2009 23:02
So, what happened tonight? Was Danyl Johnson overcome by nerves and feeling the pressure? Or was the song choice not quite right? Regardless, Simon Cowell was still backing Danyl to the hilt and gave him a standing ovation after his performance of Aerosmith's "I don't want to miss a thing".

The other judges however were less than impressed, and some focused on the tough week that Danyl has had, and his stinging critiscm in the press. Danyl himself seemed less than his usual confident self, and something just wasn't quite right tonight.

Originally predicted to sing George Michael's "Careless Whisper", perhaps there was a late change in song choice which affected his singing, but in saying that, he still finished on a typical high, and most of the audience appreciated his performances.

Maybe the tide might have turned now however? The fact that Danyl appeared sad and affected by recent media reports may have shown us his emotional side, and this being something that has been picked up on might have in actual fact done Danyl some good.

What we should really be looking for is how he bounces back next, that is of course assuming that he stays in tomorrow. Two less than great performances in a row would be not be expected of an X Factor winner, so if Danyl Johnson is to prove to us that he has what it takes to win X Factor, he has to come back with a storming performance in the next live show.

Chin up Danyl, bring back the confidence we all know you have.

X Factor: Simon Cowell says Danyl Johnson needs to tell his story

• posted on Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:09

Speaking on The Xtra Factor last night, Simon Cowell has blamed recent negative media articles about Danyl Johnson for his lack of support on the X Factor lately.

Bullying reports have surfaced regarding Danyl, and claims have been made that he has picked on fellow contestants including Kandy Rain and Stacey Solomon.

Cowell said:

“I think I’m going to have to get to the bottom of lots of the stories that are going around, people saying he is bullying them and stuff. I don’t believe them, but I think that they have an effect and we’re going to have to clear that up.

“People just don’t seem to like him. There have been stories written about him that people are not getting on with him, and he is going to have to put his side of the story across.”

Danyl In Last Two On The Live Show

• posted on Sunday, 25 October 2009 20:46

Well, it just proves the fact that nobody is safe. Danyl smashed it yet again and in our opinion he was the best on the night, but in a shock vote from the public he was in the bottom two for the very first time, along with Miss Frank.

Danyl's second song was brilliant (as usual), and much better than Miss Frank who seemed a bit shaky at times during their second performance. Singing the song that set him alight during the first auditions, "With a little help from my friends", Danyl recaptured his swagger, and though the judges let the vote go to deadlock, Miss Frank were the unfortunate group to go this week.

Possibly the fact that Danyl is still the favourite meant that people simply weren't voting for him as they assumed he would be a dead cert to go through.

Louis said: "I cannot believe these two acts are in the bottom. These two acts are amazing performers. I think it's unfair."

And Simon was also shocked at the result, saying "I have never ever been so surprised in my life. If this is your last performance Danyl, I've never heard anyone go out on such a high."

Talking directly to Danyl Johnson, simon went further to say "This is a joke you're in this position - It's a total joke."

Lets not let this happen again so dont forget, pick up the phone and vote in future shows. Let all get behind Danyl and push him all the way to the final!

Brian Friedman backs Danyl Johnson to win!

• posted on Thursday, 22 October 2009 07:51

Brian Friedman, X Factor's creative director, has admitted that he thinks Danyl Johnson will win this year’s series.

Speaking with Closer magazine, Brian said: “Danyl has the most star quality. He has the confidence, swagger and knows how to work the camera.”

Brian works with each of the acts day in, day out, so he knows more than anybody who has the potential to go on to win the contest. Backing Danyl for the top prize should be a great confidence boost - but does he need any more confidence?

Let us know what you think below!

Also in this weeks news, Whitney Houston was apparently upset after Simon Cowell gave one of her new tracks to Danyl Johnson for last week’s live show.

‘I Didn’t Know My Own Strength’ was supposed to kept secret for Whitney's forthcoming comeback tour, but Simon wanted to give it to Danyl to sing.

Speaking in The Mirror newspaper, a source said: “You’d never guess that anyone could leave Simon speechless – he usually has contestants quivering in their boots. But he has got a taste of his own medicine with Whitney.

“They had a lot of playful chemistry and got on like a house on fire.”

Simon and Whitney are still friends though, and Simon showed his appreciation by ordering her a basket of toiletries and pamper products from brand Jo Malone.

Danyl Johnson wants to date Simon Cowell?

• posted on Tuesday, 20 October 2009 22:01
Talking in OK! magazine this week, current X-Factor joint favourite Danyl Johnson apparently confessed to his mother that he fancied Simon Cowell!

Whether there's any truth in this we'll probably never know, but the mega-confident singing sensation supposedly told his mum Maria Burgess that he would love to go out with the multi-millionaire Cowell.

Danyl joked to his mum that "he'd like to go on a date with Simon", but Maria said "If he brought him home - I'd be totally gobsmacked!"

His mum also revealed that back in 2006, Danyl had previously auditioned for X-Factor but strangely was not even picked to perform in front of the judges! (How the hell did that happen?)Sack whoever was responsible for that cock-up we say!

However, maybe it was a blessing in disguise as it was the one and only Leona Lewis who won that particular year :)

Finally, Danyl's mother Maria added, "Danyl has made me the proudest woman in the world". Aww, how sweet :)

Danyl Johnson's first X-Factor audition - the best Simon Cowell has ever seen!

Launching himself firmly into the spotlight of UK audiences, here is Danyl's first audition for the X-Factor, where he stunned the crowd and had Simon Cowell standing in appreciation. Danyl's rendition of "With a little help from my friends" was judged by Simon to be the best first audition he has ever heard - and thats certainly saying something!

Danyl's audition was featured on the first episode of this years X-Factor, and he had the last slot in the show. The first of many performances that we will surely see from the British schoolteacher. Will we see him back teaching kids in school again after the finals are over?  We don't think so!
